Against the backdrop of the recent escalations over Nagorno-Karabakh, Iran appears to have the highest interest in maintaining regional peace, says Karen Mkrtchyan, an expert from the Yerevan-based center Arevelk (east).
“Iran’s key goal is the reinforcement of peace and establishment of guarantees. Being directly adjacent to the border, Iran is more than any other [country] interested in establishing peace, driven by its security interestz,” Karen Mkrtchyan said at a news conference on Saturday.
Speaking of the Islamic Republic’s position on the Nagorno-Karabah conflict, the expert also appreciated its somewhat “positive neutrality”.
“In the Islamic world, it isn’t easy at all to outline a clear-cut border. We must have an understanding approach to this, as Iran’s positive neutrality is inappreciable to us,” he added.
